final project
Popsilos is an agritourism circuit spread out between Ottawa and Montreal in the Prescott-Russell region started by founders Jennifer Larocque and Mat Mault in 2017. It aims to promote collaboration and agritourism by working with farm owners and artists to transform ordinary farm silos into works of art. Each Popsilo focuses on a specific theme agreed upon by both the farm owner and artist, for the artist to transform the silo into a work of art emulating the chosen theme.
While Popsilos offers an excellent opportunity for potential tourists as a viable road-trip circuit, Popsilos IX goes a step further to enhance the experience for participants. Through designing offline materials for Popsilos, Popsilos IX creates an experience worth noting for enlightening tourists about the farming process and the various cultural and culinary stops along the circuit. The multiple components of Popsilos IX are compiled in an informative and interactive website developed using ArcGIS and Storymaps.
The above animation showcases how the materials enhance the road trip and agrotourism experience. The video, created using Procreate, follows a family of three as they drive up to the Prescott-Russel area, exploring the silos nearby and using some of the assets provided by Popsilos IX.
Your Popsilos Road Trip Map
The redesigned “Your Popsilos Road Trip Map” has two sides and is letter-sized, so travellers can print it at home. Narrowing down and fitting the relevant information into a printable sheet was critical, as travellers should have all the relevant information before departing on their journey. The front side displays the entirety of the circuit, alternative destinations, and 12 communities in the area between the silos. The back of the “Your Popsilos Road Trip Map” illustrates the six silos and 14 “Broue and Chew” destinations. By enlarging these illustrations and placing them on a separate page, viewers can repurpose the map as a checklist of what they saw at the silos and what locations they have yet to visit.
Silo Sam Activity Sheet
A second map and activity sheet for children provides entertainment and educational content for children on during the drive to the Popsilos. The Popsilos IX Family Activity Road Map (F.A.R.M.) contains a colouring sheet and other activities presented by Silo Sam.
Brochure
The Popsilos IX brochure contextualizes the featured stops along the Popsilos circuit. The previously existing brochure only highlights the circuit’s map, directing readers to the website for additional information on the stops or the surrounding areas. The Popsilos IX brochure takes a different approach, as its primary goal is to inform visitors what to expect at each stop. Within the printable brochure, each farm’s key attributes are outlined.
Augmented Reality
To enhance immersion in the Popsilos circuit, a mobile augmented reality experience was added to a select few destinations. Using parts of the art as an anchor, the visitor can use any device to interact with the art when visiting different silos in the circuit and experience the art of the silo in a new and engaging way. Using the app Artivive, the elements of the art come to life via overlapping animation and elemental sounds to immerse the visitor further and encourage future visits. The idea of a location-based mobile augmented reality was supported through a readily available application, Artivive.
