Frequently Asked Questions

What is Create-Collab?

Create-Collab is an interdisciplinary design event for BMPD and Journalism undergraduate students on Saturday, March 22, 2025, 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, hosted by the Bachelor of Media Production and Design and Journalism programs at Carleton University. In groups, BMPD and Journalism work as equal collaborators to design a fact-based digital media project addressing a provided design prompt for a chance to win a cash prize. The first Create-Collab took place on March 16, 2024.

What was the Create-athon?

From April 29-May 2, 2022 and on March 18, 2023, three groups of BMPD students worked together to compete in the first two “Create-athons”— an event series funded under the Carleton University Experiential Learning Fund designed to bring students and industry leaders together to design a digital media project. Borrowing from the format of Hackathons and Game Jams, the short sprint events allowed student groups to work together to answer a design challenge and create a project proposal or prototype. A professional mentor from the media production and design industry worked with each group to help brainstorm, plan, critique, and troubleshoot at various project stages. The result in each event were three exceptional prototypes that uniquely addressed design challenges and showcased what BMPD students are capable of achieving.

How is Create-Collab connected to the Create-athon?

Create-Collab is an extension of the previous successful Create-athon events that focused on bringing students from the BMPD program and industry leaders together to design a digital media project. The first Create-Collab took place on March 16, 2024. The event provides students from both departments with an opportunity to use their growing skillsets to create fact-based digital media projects that support the core learning objectives of both degrees while encouraging greater community growth.
