Ottawa City Hall

How city hall is different from a usual party system

We would like to acknowledge that the City Hall’s location is on the Algonquin nation’s unceded territories.

110 Laurier Ave W, Ottawa, ON K1P 1J1

The Ottawa City Hall has two connected buildings downtown, with one modern wing located on Laurier Avenue and a 19th-century wing location on Elgin Street

differences between city hall and a party system

 City Hall

  • City Hall is the building of a municipal government.
  • There is no representative of the crown at the city level.
  • Citizens vote directly for the mayor, their ward’s councillor, and a school board trustee.
  • Elected officials do not represent parties.
  • Officials represent an electoral district.
  • They have a mayor and a city council.
  • Ottawa’s City Council has 25 elected members.
  • Mayor: represents the entire city.
  • 24 Councillors: each represent a ward.
  • The Mayor and City Councillors serve for four years.
  • Deal with local issues such as water, garbage, fire departments etc.

Party System

  • Campaign based on values.
  • Has a crown representative.
  • Citizens vote for a Member of Parliament to represent them in their own riding.
  • Citizens are not voting for a Prime Minister.
  • Political parties compete in elections to form a majority government.
  • Political parties are at the federal and provincial levels.
  • Party leaders are elected by their own party members.
  • Canadians choose members of parliament to represent them.
