Mark Sutcliffe
Born July 14th 1968, Mark Sutcliffe was raised in Ottawa, Ontario for all his life before being elected mayor of Ottawa on October 24, 2022.
Working as a broadcast journalist for more than 30 years, Sutcliffe was able to cover political and current events throughout his career. During this time, Sutcliffe worked with CFRA and CityNews, and served as executive editor and columnist for the Ottawa Citizen before transitioning into municipal politics.
Additionally, Sutcliffe has held leadership roles as chair of the boards for United Way Ottawa, the Ottawa Board of Trade, OrKidstra, the Great Canadian Theatre Company, Ottawa Community Housing Foundation, and Run Ottawa. Additionally, Mark has been a board member for organizations such as Algonquin College, Invest Ottawa, Kind Ottawa, the Ottawa International Writers Festival, and the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation.

Priorities during term
During Sutcliffe’s term, he’s made a commitment to five areas of improvement within our communities. Below are three important calls to action that he has addressed and reached significant progress with.
Addressing substance use disorder and mental illness
- A pilot program is set to launch in 2024, offering residents an alternative to 911.
- This new number will connect individuals to a team specially trained to provide compassionate support for those facing a mental health or substance abuse crisis.
Improving the transportation system
- Increase road maintenance and winter clearing budgets by $100 million over 4 years to fix potholes, improve road upkeep, and enhance winter clearing standards.
- Implement recommendations from the Phase 1 light rail inquiry to fix the system and advance Phase 2, while securing funding for Phase 3 to extend rail to Kanata, Stittsville, and Barrhaven.
- Modernize OC Transpo bus routes and schedules to better meet rider needs, including a new pay structure and an improved app for route navigation.
Tackling the housing and homelessness crisis
- More supportive housing units are now available than shelter beds.
- Prioritize building 100,000 new homes in our city over the next ten years.
- Deliver on the city’s community housing commitments, building 1,000 units per year.
- Began first stage of comprehensive strategy to transition single adults experiencing homelessness out of Physical Distancing Centres and shelters and into transitional and supportive housing.
