The Zine Project

Team: Alice Dunlop, Emma Roy, Timofe Oyawale

Partner: Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA)

Description

The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA) is an organization that aims to transform the health of Anishinaabe people across Kiiwetinoong by providing community-led services and a voice for their community health needs. They serve 33 First Nation communities in the Sioux Lookout region of Ontario, Canada.

The Zine Project is an online presence that encourages the creation of zines to boost Indigenous youth mental health. We accomplish this by publishing zines, promoting zine-making workshops, and sharing fun and engaging information about the world of zines and how to get started. Following a laissez-faire style inspired by a sketchbook, The Zine Project aims to be a friendly and accessible resource that promotes self-discovery and expression through art.

This project aims to be a safe space for Indigenous youth to explore their thoughts and emotions. We hope to introduce zine-making as an outlet for them to let go, let loose, and express themselves without being confined to a box. Through the zine-making process, we hope to show how art can be a more natural and accessible way to articulate emotions.
