This is the Hate Monster. The Hate Monster is going around Ottawa saying mean things, leaving people out, and making others feel unwelcome, just because they’re different! It doesn’t realize how much harm it’s causing, but you can help change that!

The Hate Monster isn’t truly bad, it just needs to learn. When people stand up for kindness and fairness, it starts to listen, understand, and become kinder.

That’s where you come in! You’re going to be the Superhero, who is someone who recognizes when things are unfair and takes action to make things better. You don’t need a cape or superpowers: just kindness, courage, and being a good friend. Whether it’s standing up for a friend, speaking out against unfairness, or treating everyone with respect, you, the Superhero, can help make the world a better place! Are you ready to be a Superhero? Let’s go!

As a hero, you will face the monster head-on. Your understanding will bring it warmth and love. Through your dedication to learning and growing your knowledge, the Hate-Crime Monster will be transformed. Hatred and harm will gradually fade, making way for love and peace.

Here are some monsters of different sizes. Each monster shows how many hate crimes happened that year. From 2015 to 2019, the monster grew very fast and is much larger. Although people keep on protecting themselves to avoid harm from the monster, the monster is getting too strong that it can create even more harm around the city.

These monsters represent the harm that hate crimes bring to people. Hate crimes hurt people’s feelings, and safety. When the monster grows, it means more people are getting hurt, and that’s something we should all try to stop together.
