Sometimes, the Hate Monster does things that make people feel sad or unsafe. We need your help to spot it! Let’s look at how we can spot the Hate Monster and help it become a friend instead of a bully!
How to know if the Hate Monster is around
Meaning Words or Name-Calling
When someone says hurtful things about a person’s race, religion, or other parts of their identity.
Example: “You don’t belong here because of your skin colour!”
What To Do
If you hear this, tell a trusted adult. Words can hurt just as much as actions.
Excluding someone on purpose
If a person is left out because of who they are, that’s not okay.
Example: “You can’t play with us because you’re different!”
What To Do
Be kind! Invite them to join!
Huring someone
If someone is hit, pushed, or attacked, or hurt because of their identity, that’s a hate crime.
Example: Pushing someone because they speak a different language.
What To Do
Tell an adult right away. Violence is never okay.
4. Mean Messages or Graffiti
Sometimes the Hate Monster leaves hurtful words in messages or on walls.
Example: Seeing mean words written about a certain group of people.
What To Do
Tell someone who can help, like a teacher, adult you trust or police officer.
5. Online Bullying
The Hate Monster also shows up on the internet! If someone posts mean or hurtful things about a group of people, that’s still a hate crime.
Example: Someone posts, “You don’t belong here because of where you’re from!”
What To Do
Don’t reply, but take a screenshot and tell an adult.
